"Live" Performance?
The availability of good cheap digital video cameras and the rise of broadband opens up a new possibility for "live" performance. Why not simply make live performance videos available via the internet? Of course this has already been done, extensively. But technical limitations in the past have usually led to small, jerky low quality video. As things develop technically, the effectiveness of posting live videos (and by "live", I really mean recordings of your live performances) will increase dramatically as a way of reaching a diffuse audience. Then we can expect to see the "hub" sites...."LiveBandVideos.com" and so forth. And videos can already be distributed on a legal-for-profit basis via Weed (which works off the .wma format). Obviously there's a developing intersection here between the independent music and independent video worlds.
Remember that music videos remain one of the most expensive (and, presumably, effective- otherwise they wouldn't outlay all that money) promotional options, still largely only available to the labels. As this changes, the current business models will come under further strain.
